Lucid, the electric vehicle startup that’s made waves with its Air sedan, is gearing up for a major expansion. According to a recent MotorTrend report, the company’s ambitious plans include launching the Lucid Gravity SUV and developing a new midsize platform. This move signals Lucid’s intent to boost sales and achieve the scale necessary to compete with established automakers.
Gravity SUV: Lucid’s Next Big Thing
The Lucid Gravity, a three-row electric SUV, is set to hit the market later this year. It’s shaping up to be a formidable entry in the luxury EV space. Customers will have the choice between 5 or 7-passenger configurations, catering to different family sizes and needs. Under the hood, the Gravity will pack a punch with dual motors churning out approximately 800 horsepower. That’s enough oomph to rival some high-performance sports cars.
Range anxiety? Not with the Gravity. Lucid’s promising an impressive 440 miles on a single charge, thanks to its hefty 120 kWh battery pack. This puts it well ahead of many competitors in the electric SUV market. As for pricing, Lucid’s aiming for a starting price of about $80,000, positioning it in the premium segment but still within reach of luxury SUV buyers.
Eric Bach, Lucid’s SVP of Product, didn’t shy away from acknowledging the challenges ahead. “We have resource constraints. We are still growing,” he stated, hinting at the hurdles Lucid faces as it ramps up production and expands its lineup.
The “Earth” Platform: Lucid’s Key to Mass Market Success
Lucid’s ambitions extend far beyond the Gravity. The company is hard at work developing a new midsize platform dubbed “Earth.” This versatile platform is set to underpin multiple vehicles, showcasing Lucid’s commitment to diversifying its offerings. Plans include a two-row crossover for those who want a more compact option, a rugged SUV for adventure seekers, and a sedan for traditionalists who prefer a lower-riding vehicle.
Bach’s vision for the Earth platform is nothing short of audacious. He sees it as Lucid’s ticket to reaching a production volume of 1 million vehicles per year. It’s an incredibly ambitious target for a young automaker, but it demonstrates the company’s determination to become a major player in the EV market.
Evolving the Air: Lucid’s Flagship Keeps Improving
While new models are on the horizon, Lucid isn’t forgetting about its firstborn. The Air sedan, which put Lucid on the map, is slated for continuous improvements. New software updates are in the pipeline, promising to enhance the user experience and potentially add new features.
There’s also talk of the Air adopting some of the Gravity’s advanced electronics architecture, which could bring significant upgrades to the sedan’s capabilities. However, those hoping for a NACS charge port on the 2025 model year will have to wait a bit longer.
Bach’s candid admission about the Air’s initial launch challenges was refreshingly honest. “We were still putting wings on the plane as it was falling to the ground,” he said, acknowledging the learning curve Lucid faced as a new automaker.
Lucid’s Multi-Pronged Growth Strategy
To achieve the scale necessary for long-term success, Lucid is pursuing a multi-faceted strategy. They’re expanding globally, with a new store opening in Frankfurt, Germany. This move into the European market puts Lucid in direct competition with established luxury brands on their home turf.
Additionally, Lucid is open to technology licensing deals. This could provide a valuable revenue stream and help establish Lucid’s tech as an industry standard. The company is also setting up shop in Detroit, tapping into the wealth of automotive talent in Motor City.
Bach didn’t mince words when discussing the competition, particularly from China. He emphasized the need to watch Chinese EV makers closely, noting their strengths in software development and manufacturing efficiency.
