Lucid Motors, known for its high-end electric vehicles, is set to broaden its appeal with plans for three new affordable models. This news comes from a recent report by Car and Driver.
The Mid-Size Program
Derek Jenkins, Lucid’s senior vice president of design and brand, revealed to CarBuzz that the company is working on what they call a “mid-size program.” This initiative aims to create more accessible electric vehicles for a broader market.
“We’re creating a range of personalities around that program,” Jenkins stated. “But you have to do that by blowing people away and alleviating any fear or doubt that they have in their mind about going to EV.”
What We Know So Far
One of the planned models is expected to be a sub-$50,000 mid-size SUV, as previously announced by Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson. This vehicle, potentially named “Lucid Earth” or “Earth Dream Edition” based on trademark filings, is slated for production in late 2026.
Jenkins described the new models as “compact, lighter vehicles with every bit of focus on aero, efficiency, and space,” suggesting that at least one could be a mid-size sedan to compete with the Tesla Model 3.
Expanding the EV Market
Lucid’s move towards more affordable models represents a significant shift for the company, which currently offers the Air sedan starting at $71,400. This strategy aligns with the broader industry trend of making electric vehicles more accessible to average consumers.
“The whole idea is to take our technology and hit a wider swath of consumers and accelerate that transition,” Jenkins explained, highlighting Lucid’s commitment to expanding EV adoption.
EVXL’s Take
Lucid’s plan to introduce more affordable electric models is a promising development for the EV market. As we’ve seen with Tesla’s success, offering a range of vehicles at different price points can significantly boost adoption rates. Lucid’s expertise in high-performance EVs could translate into impressive, yet accessible vehicles for the mass market, potentially accelerating the transition to electric mobility.
This move also reflects the growing competition in the EV space, pushing manufacturers to innovate and diversify their offerings. As Lucid joins the race to create more affordable electric cars, consumers stand to benefit from a wider range of options and potentially lower prices across the board.
