Tesla‘s performance in China remains strong, with the electric vehicle giant recording its second-best week of Q3 2024 for new vehicle insurance registrations. According to Sawyer Merritt’s post on X, 15,600 Teslas were insured in China last week.
Q3 Numbers Paint a Positive Picture
While this figure represents a slight 3.7% decrease from the previous week’s 16,200 registrations, it’s still an impressive showing. Tesla’s Q3 performance in China is shaping up to be robust, with registrations up 26.0% quarter-over-quarter and 20.3% year-over-year after 11 weeks.
Year-to-Date Growth
Tesla China’s year-to-date registrations were up 1.9% year-over-year as of the previous week. This growth is particularly noteworthy given the increasingly competitive Chinese EV market.
Giga Shanghai’s Role
These sales figures primarily come from the output of Giga Shanghai, Tesla’s export hub and, until recently, the sole facility producing the upgraded Model 3. The plant’s importance to Tesla’s global strategy can’t be overstated.
Comparison to Competitors
While Tesla’s numbers are strong, it’s worth noting the performance of other EV makers in China for the same week:
- BYD led with 86,000 registrations
- Li Auto followed with 12,600
- Xpeng and Nio registered 4,300 and 4,200 vehicles respectively
Global Context
Tesla has already delivered 830,776 vehicles globally in the first half of 2024. With about 388,000 vehicles sold in the Chinese domestic market between January and August, China remains a crucial market for Tesla as it aims to surpass its 2023 global deliveries of 1,808,581 vehicles.
EVXL’s Take
The slight dip in weekly registrations doesn’t diminish Tesla’s overall strong performance in China. As the EV market continues to evolve, Tesla’s ability to maintain growth in this competitive landscape is noteworthy.
The company’s success in China is crucial for its global ambitions, especially as it faces increasing competition from local brands like Xpeng. Tesla’s continued innovation and production efficiency at Giga Shanghai will be key factors to watch in the coming quarters.
