Xpeng Unveils Ultra-Affordable EV, Challenging Tesla’s Dominance

The basic version of the Mona M03 electric coupe boasts an impressive driving range of 515 kilometers (320 miles) and comes equipped with parking assist features. For those seeking more advanced capabilities, a “Max” version with enhanced driver assist features and an extended range of 580 kilometers will be available for 155,800 yuan.

These prices position the Mona M03 significantly below ‘s offerings in . The , Tesla’s most affordable option, currently sells for 231,900 yuan after a recent price cut.

Technology at the Forefront

Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng emphasized the company’s commitment to artificial intelligence in automotive technology. The Mona brand name, standing for “Made of new AI,” reflects this focus.

The standard Mona M03 includes parking assistance features, while the Max version offers more advanced capabilities. Wu Zhefeng, a Mona project manager, explained:

“The basic version of driver-assist technology in the M03 comes from Didi, while the more advanced version was made by Xpeng.”

Market Strategy and Collaboration

Xpeng’s strategy involves targeting young professionals, particularly those two or three years post-graduation. The company has leveraged its collaboration with ride-hailing giant Didi to develop the Mona M03, utilizing technology acquired from Didi in August 2023.

To achieve its competitive pricing, Xpeng focused on energy efficiency and partnered with BYD to use their popular “blade battery” in the Mona M03.
