The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is taking another major step in expanding the state’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure, announcing $22 million in federal funding for 35 new charging stations across the state. This second round of funding aims to create a more comprehensive charging network along major interstates and state highways.
Strategic Placement of New Chargers
The expansion includes fast-charging stations with a minimum of four ports each, strategically positioned within 50-mile intervals. The new locations will blanket the state’s major arteries, with six stations planned along Interstate 64, three along Interstate 95, and additional stations distributed across I-66, I-77, I-81, and I-85. The plan also includes crucial coverage along state Routes 17, 23, 29, and 460.
Diverse Installation Locations
VDOT has carefully selected diverse venues for the charging stations, with nearly two-thirds being installed at convenience stores, gas stations, and travel centers. Hotels and motels will host 17% of the stations, while dining and shopping locations will account for 11%. The remaining 9% will be situated at new construction sites.
“The buildout of the electric vehicle charging stations is seen as critical to the adoption of electric vehicles to reduce climate changing emissions from tailpipes,” notes the report, highlighting that transportation accounts for about one-third of greenhouse gas emissions in Virginia.
Timeline and Implementation Challenges
While construction is set to begin soon, the project faces some hurdles. Supply chain issues, particularly with transformers, could delay completion by 6 to 18 months. The first chargers from this round may be operational in 2024, with the full network expected to be complete by 2026.
EVXL’s Take
This expansion aligns perfectly with the growing demand for reliable charging infrastructure. As we’ve seen in our coverage at Ford and other manufacturers, range anxiety remains a key barrier to EV adoption, especially in rural areas. Virginia’s strategic placement of these chargers could serve as a model for other states looking to build out their charging networks.
