Porsche posted a photo of a car key on X on Monday with three short lines: “The turn of a key. Mission S world premiere. 15 October at 10:30 PM CEST.” That works out to 4:30 PM Eastern on Thursday, and evo reports the unveiling will take place in New York.
At its October 7 Capital Markets Day, Porsche announced it is developing a mid-engined super sports car platform for a model line above the 911, and it calls the Mission S concept a preview of that platform. CEO Michael Leiters said the model would be offered purely with combustion powertrains, Autocar reported. Porsche’s 2023 hypercar concept, the Mission X, was all-electric.
Porsche’s Teasers Show an 8,000-RPM Redline Behind the Key
Porsche’s Instagram teasers for the Mission S show an animated tachometer with a redline just under 8,000 rpm in Normal mode and right on it in Sport and Track. A second image shows a 959-style rear spoiler. Porsche has not confirmed the engine’s layout, displacement or output.
The dial animation is the one CarBuzz walked through, and autoevolution points out that the gauges sit on motorized mechanisms that move, an analog touch an EV’s screens don’t need.
Porsche Makes the 718 Electric-Only While Its Flagship Goes Gas
The same October 7 strategy that gives the flagship a combustion engine makes the next 718 Boxster and Cayman electric-only. Autocar reports Porsche has dropped its plan to rework their platform for gas engines, and Porsche’s own release names 2028 as the cars’ first full year of production.
That reverses the course EVXL reported in December 2025, when Porsche was re-engineering the PPE Sport platform to take combustion engines. Porsche’s strategy release keeps what it calls a “three-pronged” powertrain approach and announces investment in combustion and plug-in hybrid drives alongside the next generation of battery technology. Autocar puts the target mix at roughly two combustion models for every EV. A new B-segment SUV arrives in 2028 with gas and plug-in hybrid power only, sold alongside the electric Macan.
Leiters also repeated the line he drew on the 911 in June: “I can assure you, the 911 will never be electric.” He came to Porsche from McLaren, where evo notes he was a vocal skeptic of electric supercars.
EVXL’s Take
I’d make the same trade Porsche just made. The Mission X concept pitched a 900-volt electric hypercar in 2023, one Porsche said would charge at around twice the speed of a Taycan Turbo S. Porsche’s flagship plan is now gas, and its electric sports car is the 718, which the October 7 release counts on to support sales in 2028. An electric Boxster will put far more owners into EVs than an electric hypercar would. Thursday’s reveal in New York is still a concept, so the 718 stays the only new electric Porsche sports car with a production year attached.
