GM’s Corvette engineering chief Tony Roma has confirmed that a fully electric Corvette remains in the company’s future, but he isn’t promising when it will arrive. Speaking on The Drivecast in an interview reported October 14, Roma said, “Someday we will fully electrify Corvette. But not today.”
The statement renews a commitment GM made four years ago. It does not establish a production program or launch date.
GM’s Electric Corvette Promise Dates Back to 2022
In an April 25, 2022 LinkedIn post, GM President Mark Reuss said the company would offer both an electrified Corvette and a fully electric, Ultium-based version.
Roma’s new comments to The Drive support that longer-term intention of a fully electric model. In The Drive’s account, he offered no production specifications or indication that an electric Corvette will arrive during the current mid-engine C8 generation.
Chevrolet’s Electrified Corvettes Still Have V8 Engines
The 2024 Corvette E-Ray introduced hybrid power, pairing a 6.2-liter V8 with a front electric motor for all-wheel drive. It can run briefly on battery power, but gasoline remains the main powering factor.
For 2027, Chevrolet introduced the Grand Sport X, which takes the E-Ray’s place, combining a new 6.7-liter V8 with front-axle electric assistance for 721 horsepower. The ZR1X goes further. Its twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 and front electric motor produce a combined 1,250 horsepower.
All three offer electric assistance, but they have not had electric batteries replace their combustion engines.
The 2,000-HP Corvette CX Will Not Reach Production
Chevrolet unveiled the fully electric Corvette CX in August 2025. Its four motors, one driving each wheel, produce more than 2,000 horsepower from a 90-kWh lithium-ion battery.

An aerodynamic system that uses a fan draws air through the body to generate downforce, while an aircraft-style canopy opens forward above the cockpit.
Chevrolet explicitly stated that the CX is not intended for production. Executive design director Phil Zak described it as an opportunity to explore Corvette styling without normal production constraints.
The CX wasn’t GM’s only electric Corvette exploration. Its UK studio showed an EV-focused concept in April of 2025, followed by a California design study in July. GM identified both as experiments with no production plans.
GM Has Built Electric Cars, Just Not an Electric Corvette
GM’s broader EV business has moved beyond concepts. We wrote about the first Cadillac Celestiq deliveries in 2025.
Cadillac’s Opulent Velocity is another example of an electric concept that has not been approved for production, showing that even ambitious designs do not necessarily become vehicles customers can buy.
EVXL’s Take
Roma’s interview matters because it confirms Reuss’s 2022 promise has not simply been abandoned. But “someday” gives little information to buyers waiting for an electric Corvette.
Chevrolet already builds a 1,250-hp hybrid Corvette, and its designers have designed a 2,000-hp electric one. What GM still needs to do is deliver a production announcement with a realistic timeline.
Until then, a production electric Corvette remains a promise rather than a car buyers can order.
