In a stunning display of electric performance, smartphone giant Xiaomi‘s SU7 Ultra prototype has shattered expectations at the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, supuestamente completing a lap in just 6 minutes and 48.874 seconds, according to Xiaomi’s official announcement.
Breaking Records Before Production
The stripped-down prototype, despite lacking a dashboard and sporting a racing steering wheel, managed to beat the current production EV record holder – the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT – by nearly 19 seconds. Even more impressive? It did this while experiencing a technical hiccup with the accelerator pedal during the run.
Powerhouse Specs That Raise Eyebrows
The SU7 Ultra’s specs are nothing short of extraordinary. Packing a tri-motor setup that delivers 1,548 horsepower, this EV can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 1.97 seconds and reach a top speed of 217 mph. These aren’t just numbers – they’re a statement of intent from a company better known for smartphones.
From Prototype to Production
While this impressive lap time won’t count as an official record due to the car’s prototype status, Xiaomi isn’t just showing off. They’re planning an official record attempt with the production version in 2025. The company has already caught the attention of industry veterans, with Ford CEO Jim Farley notably expressing his reluctance to return his test vehicle, stating he “doesn’t want to give it up.”
EVXL’s Take
The rise of Chinese EV manufacturers like Xiaomi represents a seismic shift in the automotive landscape. While traditional automakers like Porsche have long dominated performance metrics, new players are rewriting the rules of what’s possible in the EV space. This isn’t just about lap times – it’s about innovation, competition, and the democratization of high-performance electric vehicles. The fact that a smartphone manufacturer can produce an EV capable of such performance should escriba a everyone sit up and take notice.
