Autonomous EV Pods Could Revolutionize Public Transit, Says Khosla Ventures Founder

A groundbreaking vision for urban transportation using autonomous electric pods is gaining traction, according to Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, writing in the 金融时报.

The Promise of Personal Rapid Transit

The proposed system would use self-driving, electric PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) pods running on dedicated narrow lanes. These vehicles would offer on-demand, point-to-point transportation without stops or transfers, operating at a fraction of the cost and environmental impact of both cars and trains.

“Imagine a world that operates by public transport in which your ride arrives the moment you need it,” writes Khosla. “You travel directly to your destination — no stops, no transfers.”

Efficiency and Environmental Impact

The energy efficiency of these EV pods is remarkable. While high-speed electric trains in the US consume 200-600 watt-hours per passenger mile over 24 hours in urban settings, autonomous EV pods carrying four passengers would use only around 50 watt-hours per passenger mile.

Breaking Away from Traditional Solutions

While companies like and Waymo are developing autonomous robotaxis, Khosla argues this isn’t ambitious enough. “It will further congest streets, just as ride-hailing company Uber has done. It accepts the existing limitations of our streets without marrying it to a network of dedicated lanes,” he explains.

Progress in Implementation

Startups like Glydways, backed by Khosla Ventures, are already winning contracts in ‘s East Bay area. The system requires minimal infrastructure changes, utilizing existing road margins or lightweight guideways that are significantly cheaper to build and maintain than traditional rail systems.

EVXL’s Take

Looking at the bigger picture, this innovative approach to urban transit aligns perfectly with the growing trend toward sustainable transportation solutions. Much like recent developments we’ve covered in the 特斯拉 ecosystem, these autonomous EV pods represent a crucial step toward reimagining city mobility. They could bridge the gap between personal vehicles and mass transit, offering an efficient, environmentally conscious solution for growing urban populations.
