While Tesla‘s electric vehicles (EVs) boast advanced safety features making them some of the toughest cars to steal, a recent theft ring in Portland, Oregon has shown that where there’s a will, there’s a way. In an audacious move, these thieves have adopted an inventive method to maken off with Tesla cars, highlighting potential vulnerabilities in even the most technologically advanced vehicles.
The popularity of Tesla’s vehicles is undeniable. As one of the best-selling EV brands on the planet, a blend of the Supercharger-netwerk, cutting-edge software, and stellar safety features make these cars particularly appealing. In terms of theft prevention, Tesla’s Sentry Mode uses the car’s multiple cameras to continuously monitor and record its surroundings.
Additionally, the company’s software, touted as one of the most secure in the auto industry, makes bypassing the keyless entry system a daunting task. As an extra layer of security, the “PIN to Drive” feature requires a unique code before the car can be driven.
Despite these impressive safety features, “Of course, no measure to prevent theft is 100% guaranteed, which is why people still try to steal Teslas,” the article from Auto Evolution explains
Typically, one of Tesla’s primary defenses against theft is its embedded GPS tracking device. This feature has resulted in Teslas having a notably higher recovery rate compared to other car brands. Moreover, if Tesla opts to blacklist a stolen car, it becomes essentially inoperable.
Yet, determined thieves see the challenge in evading these measures. Rather than enjoying a stolen Tesla’s ride, most criminals resell the stripped parts on the black or grey market. And here’s the kicker: to ensure that the stolen cars remain undetected, they’re disabling the internal GPS devices, an act that is more effective than merely jamming the signal.
However, there’s a silver lining. The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) reports a victory against this trend. The PPB’s Stolen Vehicle Unit successfully dismantled the theft operation, recovering four Tesla EVs in a weekend-long operation.
In the ever-evolving battle between cutting-edge technology and the audacity of thieves, this incident serves as a reminder that even the most sophisticated systems can be challenged. Yet, as always, companies like Tesla are likely to learn, adapt, and enhance their protective measures.
As the EV market continues to grow, it’s crucial for potential buyers and current owners to remain informed and vigilant.
