BYD Surpasses Tesla in Electric Car Sales
In a significant shift in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Chine‘s BYD has overtaken Tesla as the world’s best-selling maker of electric cars. In the final quarter of last year, BYD, backed by Warren Buffett, sold 526,409 fully electric vehicles, outpacing Tesla‘s 484,507.
This marks the first time BYD has exceeded Tesla’s quarterly sales, although Tesla still maintained a higher annual total with 1.81 million vehicles compared to BYD’s 1.57 million in 2023.
Tesla’s Performance and Market Dynamics
Tesla, led by Elon Musk, fell short of its two million sales target despite a 38% year-on-year increase. The American company’s efforts, including price cuts, couldn’t bridge the gap with BYD.
The Chinese EV market’s strong performance, marked by a 70% sales surge in December, significantly contributed to BYD’s success, according to Le Times.
BYD’s Ascent and Global Expansion
BYD, less known globally but a dominant force in China, has seen rapid growth. Founded by Wang Chuanfu, BYD’s diverse business includes battery production and chip manufacturing, giving it an edge over competitors grappling with raw material costs and chip shortages.
The company is now expanding beyond China into markets like L'Europe.
BYD’s surpassing of Tesla in quarterly sales signals a shift in the EV market, highlighting the growing competition and the importance of the Chinese market in shaping global EV trends.
