Tesla Showcases Autonomous Driving Prowess at We, Robot Event

Tesla demonstrated its advanced autonomous driving capabilities at the recent We, Robot event, as reported by Ashok Elluswamy from Tesla’s Autopilot Department. The electric vehicle manufacturer conducted over 1,300 fully autonomous trips without any issues, highlighting the progress of their self-driving technology.

Impressive Fleet Performance

According to Elluswamy, the event featured:

  • 19 Cybercabs and 29 Model Ys operating autonomously
  • 1,300 trips transporting more than 2,000 guests
  • Continuous operation for over 3.5 hours
  • Flawless safety record for all trips

“And every trip was perfectly safe!” Elluswamy emphasized, underscoring the reliability of Tesla’s autonomous systems. “It was really amazing to see users take the robotaxis for granted. They didn’t seem to think twice before crossing in front of it, walking alongside it, robotaxis interacting with one another etc. They behaved just the same way they would around human-driven vehicles.

The best part was that almost all of the autonomy demonstrated was using close to the production AI software or will ship soon in v13. Finally, it took an immense amount of effort from a very talented team to pull this off. The event was super motivating for the team and we are looking forward to bringing this to the real world as soon as possible.”

Advanced AI Software on Display

Sawyer Merritt noted that the fleet was running “close to the production AI software that will ship soon in FSD v13.”

This suggests that Tesla is on the verge of releasing a significant update to its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, potentially bringing enhanced autonomous capabilities to a wider range of Tesla vehicles.

Event Backdrop and Scale

The We, Robot event served as an impressive showcase for Tesla’s autonomous driving technology. An image from the event shows multiple Tesla vehicles navigating a staged urban environment, complete with pedestrians and architectural facades. The setting, with its “NOW PLAYING WE ROBOT” sign, created a cinematic atmosphere for demonstrating the cars’ capabilities.

EVXL’s Take

Tesla’s successful demonstration at the We, Robot event marks a significant milestone in the development of autonomous driving technology. As we’ve seen in recent Tesla news, the company continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with electric vehicles and self-driving capabilities. This event not only showcases Tesla’s technological prowess but also hints at the future of urban transportation, where autonomous electric vehicles could become commonplace in our cities.
