Acura, Honda‘s luxury brand, is gearing up to electrify its performance lineup with a new battery-powered sports car. This exciting development, reported by MotorAuthority, signals a major shift in the company’s approach to high-performance vehicles.
A New Era for Acura Performance
Shinji Aoyama, global executive vice president for Honda, revealed at the 2024 Monterey Car Week that an “NSX-type of vehicle” is in the works. While it may not carry the NSX nameplate, this electric performance car will embody the spirit of Acura’s iconic supercar.

The upcoming EV will be built on Honda’s new dedicated electric platform, set to debut next year in an Acura SUV. This platform will also underpin Honda’s future 0 (Zero) Series of electric vehicles, showcasing the company’s commitment to electrification across its brands.
Advanced Technology, Without Solid-State Batteries
According to The Drive, Aoyama stated that the new performance EV won’t use solid-state batteries. Instead, it will benefit from Honda’s focus on developing a thin and lightweight EV platform, potentially offering significant performance advantages.
Made in America
In a boost for American manufacturing, Acura plans to produce this electric sports car at its Ohio facility. This sprawling production site, now referred to as the Honda EV Hub, is undergoing retooling to manufacture EVs and their components, including batteries.
Design Inspiration
While details are still scarce, Acura has previously hinted at the direction of its electric performance cars. Last year, the company unveiled the Acura Electric Vision Design concept, which appeared to be an evolution of the NSX design language adapted for the electric age.
Jon Ikeda, Acura’s brand officer, had previously alluded to a third-generation NSX as early as 2021, suggesting it would move away from traditional combustion engines.
EVXL’s Take
This move by Acura represents a significant step in the evolution of performance cars. As we’ve seen with other luxury brands like Porsche, the transition to electric powertrains doesn’t mean sacrificing performance or driving excitement. In fact, it often enhances these aspects.
Acura’s decision to develop a high-performance EV aligns with the broader industry trend towards electrification. It’s exciting to see how traditional sports car makers are reimagining their iconic models for the electric era, potentially offering even more thrilling driving experiences while reducing environmental impact.
