Tesla’s Charging Connector Dominates: CharIN Voices Concern

An industry body, CharIN, which supports the Combined Charging System (CCS) for electrified vehicles, has expressed its perspective on Tesla’s proprietary charging connector. According to the body, the Tesla model is not standardized and lacks an open charging ecosystem for the industry.

CharIN’s statement came following announcements from U.S. automakers General Motors and Ford that they would adopt Tesla’s charging model. Their vehicles will include North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports, a previous Tesla exclusive, beginning in 2025.

CharIN has committed to convening a task force with the aim of presenting the NACS for standardization, according to Reuters. They believe that open standardization should involve a peer review process where all interested parties can contribute to the development of the standard.

Charging equipment manufacturers such as Blink Charging, ChargePoint, and Tritium have acknowledged these developments and plan to offer NACS as a connector option alongside CCS in their charger offerings.

Tesla’s NACS connector enjoys a reputation for being more compact and lightweight than a CCS charger for fast charging, resulting in a more user-friendly experience for motorists. As a result of the partnerships between Tesla, Ford, and GM, it is expected that the NACS standard will govern approximately 60% of the U.S. EV market, solidifying its place within the industry.
