AM Radio Mandate Could Impact EV Manufacturers

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has approved a bill requiring new cars to include AM radio, a move that could significantly impact electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers. The bill, titled the AM for Every Vehicle Act, passed the committee with a roll-call vote of 45-2 and now heads to the full House for final approval. This legislation, introduced in response to the increasing number of vehicles without AM radio, aims to ensure that this traditional broadcast technology remains accessible in all new cars.

The Importance of AM Radio

Supporters of the bill argue that AM radio is crucial for broadcasting emergency information during natural disasters and other critical events, reports The Verge.

Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass), who co-authored the bill, emphasized the importance of AM radio, stating, “With hurricane season in full swing, it has never been more important to pass the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act and ensure that this life-saving communication tool remains in vehicles.”

The bill has garnered significant support, with 60 co-sponsors in the Senate, giving it a filibuster-proof majority.

Challenges for EV Manufacturers

Several automakers, including popular EV manufacturers like , y , have introduced new models without AM radio capabilities. These companies argue that AM radio is incompatible with EVs due to electromagnetic interference from the powertrain.

Tesla, for instance, removed AM radio from its vehicles back in 2018, citing similar reasons. initially introduced the 2024 Mustang without AM radio but later decided to reinstate it after receiving pushback from lawmakers.

AM radio, which stands for amplitude modulation, differs from FM (frequency modulation) in how the carrier wave is altered. Unlike frequency, amplitude can be affected by noise from electric devices, including smartphones, TVs, computers, and EVs. This interference can lead to distortion and crackling when picked up by the radio.

Automakers’ Perspective

Automakers generally view AM radio as an obsolete technology, arguing that there are better alternatives such as internet streaming, HD radio delivered on FM bands, or apps that provide AM content. Critics of the bill also point out that the mandate could add to the costs of producing EVs at a time when many manufacturers are struggling to control their expenses.

Albert Gore, executive director of the Zero Emission Transportation Association, highlighted the potential challenges, stating, “With a new mandate, [EV companies] will have to go through a significant powertrain redesign, vehicle redesign, because of the degree to which electric motor generates this [electromagnetic] interference.”

EVXL’s Take

The mandate for AM radio in new vehicles presents a unique challenge for EV manufacturers. While the importance of AM radio for emergency communications is undeniable, the technical hurdles and potential cost increases are significant concerns. As the EV industry continues to innovate, it’s crucial to find a balance between maintaining traditional communication methods and embracing new technologies.
