Volkswagen’s ID.2 Electric Supermini Caught Testing at Nürburgring

‘s upcoming ID.2 electric vehicle, a critical addition to the automaker’s EV lineup, has been spotted undergoing tests at ‘s legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. Auto Express reports on this significant development for the German manufacturer’s new Golf-sized, but Polo-priced electric car.

VW’s Second Chance at EV Success

The ID.2 represents a pivotal moment for Volkswagen, following a tepid reception to its first generation of purpose-built electric vehicles. With much at stake, the company is leaving no stone unturned in its next-gen EV development.

“VW’s not taking any chances with its next generation,” Auto Express notes, highlighting the importance of this model for the brand’s electric future.

New Architecture and Powertrain Configuration

While the test mule was seen running on a shortened ID.3 body, the production ID.2 will utilize a new ‘MEB Entry’ architecture. This platform brings several key changes:

  • Front-mounted single-motor powertrains, shifting from the current rear-mounted setup
  • Enhanced manufacturing flexibility
  • A return to more familiar proportions and driving dynamics

Design Insights and Technical Details

Despite the camouflage, several interesting details were observed:

  • Relocated charging port on the front wing
  • 20-inch wheels borrowed from Cupra, suggesting a focus on bold design elements
  • Expected return to a traditional two-box shape in the production model

VW is prioritizing efficiency, aiming to match or exceed the current ID.3’s range even without increasing battery size.

EVXL’s Take

The Volkswagen ID.2 marks a crucial step in the automaker’s EV strategy, addressing previous shortcomings and aiming to capture the essence of their popular combustion models in an electric package. This approach aligns with the broader industry trend of making EVs more accessible and appealing to mainstream consumers.

As we’ve seen in our Tesla coverage, established automakers are working hard to catch up with EV pioneers. Volkswagen’s focus on efficiency and familiar driving dynamics with the ID.2 could significantly narrow the gap and accelerate EV adoption among traditional VW customers.
