Electric vehicle enthusiasts in Europe now have an exciting new option as 比亚迪, China’s leading EV manufacturer, introduced its low-cost Dolphin Surf model in Berlin on May 21, 2025. Marking the company’s tenth model in the region, this compact electric car aims to make sustainable driving more accessible with competitive pricing and advanced features. According to 路透社, the Dolphin Surf ramps up competition for European automakers by offering a budget-friendly alternative in the rapidly growing EV market.
Competitive Pricing for Broader Accessibility
The BYD Dolphin Surf comes in three variants, priced from $26,100.55 (22,990 euros) for a 200-mile (322-kilometer) range model, up to 24,990 euros for a 315-mile (507-kilometer) range version.
This pricing structure positions the Dolphin Surf as one of the more affordable EVs in Europe, directly addressing the cost barrier that often hinders the wider adoption of electric vehicles. BYD’s approach targets budget-conscious consumers seeking to transition to sustainable transportation without a hefty financial burden.

Cutting-Edge Features and Performance Specs
Designed for the compact segment, the Dolphin Surf caters to urban drivers and small families looking for efficient, eco-friendly mobility. It boasts a rotatable 10.1-inch touchscreen, providing a modern, intuitive interface for navigation and entertainment.
Performance-wise, the vehicle supports fast charging, achieving 30% to 80% battery capacity in just 22 minutes. Additionally, it offers a maximum DC charging rate of 85 kW, enabling a charge from 10% to 80% in only 30 minutes, perfect for quick top-ups during busy schedules.
Safety is prioritized with the standard Advanced Driver-Assistance System (ADAS), which includes intelligent cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure assist, and intelligent high-beam control. These features ensure a secure driving experience across Europe’s diverse roads, from short city commutes to longer regional trips.
Industry Competition and Market Trends
BYD’s introduction of the Dolphin Surf increases pressure on European automakers to deliver more affordable electric options. Currently, only a handful of models like the Dacia Spring and Leapmotor’s T03 are priced under 20,000 euros, but 2025 will see 11 new models under 25,000 euros, including Volkswagen’s ID.2, Renault R5, Fiat Grand Panda, and Hyundai Inster.
As Maria Grazia Davino, BYD’s regional managing director for markets including Germany, stated in Berlin, “The compact segment is the next frontier for electrification in Europe. We think this market has huge potential.”
BYD’s strategic revamp in Europe, including expanding its dealer network to over 1,000 locations and entering 12 new markets this year, underpins the Dolphin Surf’s launch. Sales data reflects the success of these efforts, with sales quadrupling to 37,201 units in Europe in the first quarter of 2025, and 2,791 units sold in Germany alone in the first four months, nearly matching the full-year total for 2024.

A Promising Addition for European EV Drivers
With the Dolphin Surf, BYD delivers a compelling, cost-effective electric vehicle to Europe’s compact market. Packed with modern features like a rotatable touchscreen, rapid charging, and advanced safety systems, it stands out as a practical choice for both new and seasoned EV drivers.
As BYD continues to gain traction in the region, the Dolphin Surf positions itself as a key player in making sustainable mobility accessible to more people.
