GM Energy Unveils PowerBank: Revolutionizing Home Energy for EV Owners

GM Energy, a subsidiary of General Motors Co., has launched a game-changing product for electric vehicle owners – the GM Energy PowerBank. This innovative stationary energy storage unit is poised to transform how EV users manage their energy consumption and interact with the grid, as announced in a recent press release.

PowerBank: Your Home’s New Energy Ally

The PowerBank comes in two sizes, offering either 10.6 or 17.7 kilowatt-hours of storage capacity. It’s designed to give EV owners unprecedented control over their energy usage. With PowerBank, users can store energy from the grid, power their homes during outages, and even offset high electricity rates during peak times.

Wade Sheffer, VP of GM Energy, emphasized the system’s versatility: “The modularity of GM Energy’s portfolio is a key differentiator. Our energy management tools, combined with one of the market’s largest lineups of vehicle-to-home-capable EVs, gives customers more control over their energy use.”

The Complete GM Energy Home System

PowerBank isn’t a standalone product – it’s part of the comprehensive GM Energy Home System bundle. This package includes a charger and vehicle-to-home (V2H) hardware kit, all accessible via GM vehicle mobile apps for remote energy management. For those seeking maximum energy independence, two PowerBanks can be linked together, doubling the capacity to a whopping 35.4 kWh – enough to power an average U.S. home for up to 20 hours.

Expanding Horizons for EV Owners

GM Energy isn’t stopping at PowerBank. They’re also offering an optional solar panel kit, with installation available through their partner Qmerit. To support customers, they’ve launched an interactive website providing expert guidance. Pricing and delivery timelines for the PowerBank and related products are flexible, tailored to individual installation requirements.

Industry-Wide Shift to Bidirectional Charging

GM isn’t alone in exploring bidirectional charging technology. Tesla pioneered this space with its Powerwall back in 2015. Ford has joined the fray with a V2H charging kit for the F-150 Lightning. Looking ahead, BMW has announced plans for V2H capabilities in its upcoming “Neue Klasse” EVs, set to debut in 2025.
