Tesla is gearing up to introduce a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, next month, marking a significant step in the electric vehicle (EV) giant’s push toward autonomous driving. According to a recent Morgan Stanley-Tesla meeting reported by IBD, the service will initially roll out with a small fleet, focusing on safety and controlled operations as Tesla advances its self-driving technology.
A Cautious Start for Tesla’s Robotaxi Fleet
The robotaxi service will launch with a modest fleet of 10 to 20 vehicles, as confirmed by Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas, a long-time Tesla advocate. Jonas, who met with Tesla last week, noted the company’s conservative approach, emphasizing safety. “Think 10 to 20 cars. Public roads. Invite only. Plenty of tele-ops to ensure safety levels (‘we can’t screw up’),” Jonas wrote on Friday. The service will exclusively use Tesla Modelo Y vehicles, aligning with Elon Musk‘s Q1 earnings call statement:
“We expect to be selling fully autonomous rides in Austin in June. The team and I are laser focused on bringing robotaxi in Austin in June, adding that ‘unsupervised autonomy will first be solved for the Model Y in Austin.’”
This initial deployment will rely on teleoperators—remote human supervisors—to monitor and intervene if needed, ensuring the vehicles operate safely on Austin’s public roads. The invite-only model suggests Tesla is targeting a controlled group of users, likely to gather real-world data and refine its Condução totalmente autônoma (FSD) system before scaling up.
CyberCab Production on the Horizon
While the Austin robotaxi service will use Model Y vehicles, Tesla’s dedicated autonomous vehicle, the CyberCab, is also progressing. During the Q1 earnings call, Tesla executives shared that the CyberCab, which uses an “unboxed” manufacturing system, is on track for production next year. However, they noted that the unboxed process is still “progressing,” indicating it’s not yet ready for mass production.
“I feel confident predicting large scale autonomy around the middle of next year, certainly the second half of next year,” Musk said in April.
The CyberCab’s production timeline suggests Tesla is balancing its immediate robotaxi rollout with longer-term plans for a purpose-built autonomous vehicle.

Implications for EV Owners and the Industry
For EV owners and enthusiasts, Tesla’s robotaxi service could redefine urban mobility. The Model Y, already a popular choice among Tesla buyers, will serve as a testbed for unsupervised autonomy, potentially paving the way for broader FSD adoption across Tesla’s lineup. This could enhance the value of Tesla vehicles for owners, as future software updates might enable their cars to participate in ride-hailing networks, generating passive income.
From an industry perspective, Tesla’s move intensifies competition in the autonomous vehicle space, challenging companies like Waymo and Cruise. However, the reliance on teleoperators and the small fleet size highlight ongoing regulatory and technical hurdles. The U.S. Department of Transportation and local Texas authorities will likely scrutinize the service, especially given past concerns over autonomous vehicle safety. Economically, a successful rollout could boost Tesla’s valuation—already at $342.09 per share as of Monday, despite a 2.25% drop—by demonstrating progress in its high-margin autonomy business.
What’s Next for Tesla’s Autonomy Push?
Tesla’s stock performance reflects investor optimism about its self-driving efforts, with shares up 24% in May despite being 14% below the year’s high. The company’s focus on autonomy aligns with broader industry trends, as EVs increasingly integrate advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). However, with shares 28% below their December peak of $488.54, Tesla must deliver on its autonomy promises to maintain investor confidence. As the Austin robotaxi service unfolds, all eyes will be on Tesla’s ability to scale safely and efficiently, setting the stage for the CyberCab’s debut next year.
