General Motors and Hyundai are joining forces to develop new vehicles and technologies, aiming to cut costs and speed up innovation. This partnership, announced on Thursday, will focus on internal combustion, electric, and hydrogen-powered vehicles, as reported by the NY Times.
A Collaborative Effort
The two automakers have signed a nonbinding agreement to explore areas of cooperation. While details on specific projects and timelines are scarce, the goal is clear: to leverage each other’s strengths to deliver more competitive vehicles to customers faster and more efficiently.
Mary T. Barra, G.M.’s chief executive, highlighted the potential of this collaboration, stating, “G.M. and Hyundai have complementary strengths and talented teams. Our goal is to unlock the scale and creativity of both companies to deliver even more competitive vehicles to customers faster and more efficiently.”
The EV Challenge
Both companies have invested heavily in electric vehicles but have struggled to meet sales targets. High prices and charging challenges have dampened consumer enthusiasm. Despite this, the market for electric cars and trucks is growing, albeit at a modest pace.
Hyundai’s group executive chair, Chung Eui-sun, echoed the sentiment, saying, “This partnership will enable Hyundai Motor and G.M. to evaluate opportunities to enhance competitiveness in key markets and vehicle segments, as well as drive cost efficiencies and provide stronger customer value.”
The Financial Hurdle
G.M. has been losing money on its electric models but expects them to become profitable by the end of the year. Ford, another major player, lost $2.5 billion on its electric vehicle business in the first half of this year and is working to reduce production costs.
Past Partnerships
Automotive partnerships have had mixed success. Ford’s investment in Rivian and its collaboration with Volkswagen have seen ups and downs. Similarly, G.M. and Honda‘s partnership resulted in two electric SUVs but has since been scaled back. Tesla, too, has had partnerships with Toyota e Mercedes-Benz that eventually shifted.
