Tesla Cybertruck Faces Fifth Recall in Less Than a Year

Tesla’s 2024 Cybertruck has racked up its fifth recall in under a year, highlighting potential issues with the electric pickup’s design and performance. The most recent recall, affecting 27,185 vehicles, was announced on October 3, 2024, and involves a significant safety concern with the rearview camera system.

According to a report Tesla shared with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the rearview camera image may be delayed by up to two seconds when shifting into reverse. In some cases, the display may remain blank for up to eight seconds, raising the risk of a crash. Tesla has already issued an over-the-air software update to fix the problem, aiming to prevent any accidents related to this issue, reports The Verge.

Another Cybertruck Recall: What’s the Issue This Time?

The latest recall stems from concerns that the rearview camera takes too long to activate. Federal safety regulations require the rearview image to appear within two seconds of shifting into reverse, and Tesla’s Cybertruck wasn’t meeting that standard. As a result, drivers were left with delayed or no rearview visibility, posing a potential safety risk.

This is just the latest in a string of recalls for the Cybertruck. Earlier this year, Tesla recalled Cybertrucks for problems ranging from sticky accelerator pedals to defective windshield wipers and loose trim pieces. In August 2024 alone, the truck was recalled twice—once for truck bed trim that could detach and once for excessive electrical current in the windshield wiper system.

Recurring Problems, Quick Fixes

The Cybertruck’s repeated recalls have raised eyebrows, but Tesla has responded swiftly in each case. Most of the issues, including this latest camera glitch, have been fixed with over-the-air software updates. While this minimizes disruption for owners, the frequency of the recalls continues to cast doubt on the vehicle’s build quality and reliability.

Despite the setbacks, Tesla remains the dominant player in the electric vehicle market, and the Cybertruck’s popularity hasn’t wavered. In June 2024, the Cybertruck was the best-selling vehicle priced over $100,000 in the U.S., with more than 3,200 units sold that month.

Cybertruck Specs: What Makes It Stand Out?

The Cybertruck’s appeal lies in its futuristic design and impressive performance specs. Launched in November 2023, the all-electric pickup boasts two all-wheel-drive configurations:

• A Dual Motor model with 600 horsepower

• A “Beast” version with three electric motors, delivering a combined 834 horsepower

The truck’s estimated driving range tops out at 340 miles for the standard model, with the Beast offering up to 301 miles. It can tow up to 11,000 pounds and add 128-136 miles of range in just 15 minutes with Tesla’s Supercharger network.

Its standout feature, however, is the stainless-steel body, which Tesla claims is bulletproof—a claim that helped build its sci-fi reputation.

EVXL’s Take

Tesla’s Cybertruck continues to push boundaries in the EV market with its radical design and performance capabilities, but the series of recalls signals that quality control might still be a work in progress. With over-the-air updates addressing most issues quickly, it’s clear Tesla has the infrastructure to handle problems as they arise, though the frequency of these recalls is concerning.

Looking ahead, the Cybertruck’s success may depend on Tesla’s ability to refine production and reduce these reliability hiccups. As one of the most anticipated EVs on the market, the Cybertruck is a major player in reshaping the future of electric trucks.
