Tesla Model Y Performance Spotted at Nürburgring with Plaid Wheels and Upgraded Features

Tesla’s latest Model Y Performance has been caught testing at the Nürburgring, revealing exciting upgrades for electric vehicle enthusiasts. Spotted by Carscoops, this prototype showcases a sportier design and enhanced performance specs, signaling Tesla’s push to refine its compact electric crossover for high-performance driving.

Upgraded Design and Features

The Model Y Performance prototype features several notable updates. It sports a rear spoiler similar to the Model 3 Performance, along with new 21-inch wheels that resemble the Arachnid rims found on the Model S Plaid. These wheels are paired with Pirelli P-Zero tires, likely in a staggered setup with wider rear tires for improved traction. Red brake calipers hint at upgraded brakes, addressing past concerns about overheating in the Model 3 Performance during track sessions. According to Carscoops, “there are sport seats up front with added bolstering, likely borrowed from its sedan counterpart,” suggesting a more driver-focused interior.

The prototype also sits lower than standard models, enhancing its aggressive stance and driving dynamics. Tesla is expected to include an adaptive damper setup, similar to the Model 3 Performance, allowing drivers to toggle between Standard, Sport, and Track modes for a tailored driving experience.

Performance Boost and Technical Specs

Under the hood, the Model Y Performance is set to deliver 510 horsepower and 554 lb-ft of peak torque, using the same dual-motor all-wheel-drive system as the Model 3 Performance. This powertrain, paired with a 79 kWh battery, enables the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 3.2 to 3.3 seconds—a significant improvement over the previous 470-hp Model Y Performance’s 3.5-second sprint. However, the range is expected to remain around 290 miles per charge, as Tesla is unlikely to opt for a larger battery.

The lower ride height and larger wheels not only improve handling but also give the vehicle a more planted feel on the track. Carscoops notes that while the front and rear bumpers remain unchanged from the standard Model Y, these could still evolve before production.

Pricing and Availability

Tesla enthusiasts can expect the Model Y Performance to hit the market by the end of 2025, likely in the fourth quarter. Pricing is projected to start around $55,000, roughly $7,000 to $8,000 above the Long Range AWD model, which begins at $48,990 before federal tax incentives. This positions the Model Y Performance as a competitive option in the high-performance EV segment, offering a balance of power, range, and affordability.

Implications for EV Enthusiasts

The Model Y Performance’s upgrades cater to EV owners seeking a thrilling driving experience without sacrificing practicality. The enhanced brakes and adaptive dampers address key concerns for track enthusiasts, while the sportier design elements appeal to those who value aesthetics. For recreational drivers, the improved 0-60 mph time and refined handling make this model a compelling choice for spirited drives. In the broader EV industry, Tesla’s focus on performance variants strengthens its position against competitors like BMW’s i4 M50 and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 N, which are also targeting the performance EV market.

As Tesla continues to refine its lineup, the Model Y Performance underscores the company’s commitment to blending efficiency with exhilarating performance, ensuring its compact crossover remains a top choice for EV enthusiasts. Stay tuned for official updates as production nears.
