Tesla‘s highly anticipated “We, Robot” event, held on October 10, 2024, at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Californië, showcased the company’s latest advancements in autonomous vehicle technology and robotics. The event marked Tesla’s first major product reveal since the Cybertruck unveiling in 2019.
Robotaxi: The Future of Autonomous Transportation
The star of the show was undoubtedly the Robotaxi, also known as the Cybercab. This fully autonomous two-seater vehicle boasts a sleek, silver appearance with a stainless-steel finish, reminiscent of the Cybertruck’s aesthetic. The Robotaxi features butterfly doors and lacks traditional controls like a steering wheel or pedals.

Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, made a dramatic entrance by arriving at the event in a Cybercab, demonstrating its autonomous capabilities. He emphasized the vehicle’s safety, claiming it to be “10 times safer than human-driven vehicles.”
The Robotaxi is expected to begin production before 2027, with an estimated price under $30,000. It’ll be available for purchase and as part of a ride-hailing service, with operational costs estimated at $0.20 per mile ($0.40 after taxes and fees).

Robovan: Versatility on Wheels
Tesla also introduced the Robovan, a larger autonomous vehicle designed for various applications.

With a capacity for up to 20 passengers or cargo, the Robovan features a Cyber-inspired aesthetic and large glass sliding doors. Its adaptable design makes it suitable for use as school buses, RVs, and personal transport.

Optimus Robot: Your Future Household Helper
Updates on Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, were also provided. The robot demonstrated its capabilities by walking alongside employees, interacting with attendees, and even serving drinks at the event bar. With an expected price range of $20,000 to $30,000, Optimus is designed for household tasks and could potentially serve as an assistant, teacher, or companion.

Event Atmosphere and Additional Announcements
The “We, Robot” event was a spectacle in itself, featuring five themed “neighborhoods” at Warner Bros. Studios. Attendees were treated to Texas BBQ, arcade games, live music, and even a drone show displaying patterns such as “10.10 Los Angeles” and Optimus’ head in the sky.

Musk also announced plans to introduce unsupervised, fully autonomous versions of the Model 3 en Model Y in California and Texas next year. The event was livestreamed on X (formerly Twitter), attracting over 5 million viewers.
EVXL’s Take
Tesla’s “We, Robot” event marks a significant milestone in the evolution of autonomous vehicles and AI-driven transportation. The introduction of the Robotaxi and Robovan aligns with the company’s vision of a sustainable, autonomous future. These developments could potentially revolutionize urban mobility and logistics, much like Tesla’s previous innovations in the EV space.
The event also showcases Tesla’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in electric and autonomous vehicles. As we’ve seen with Tesla’s previous models, these new vehicles could set new standards for the industry and accelerate the adoption of autonomous technology.
