A significant fire incident occurred this past weekend at Rivian’s electric vehicle factory in Normal, Illinois, as reported by InsideEVs. The blaze, which broke out in the factory’s parking lot, resulted in damage to more than 50 Rivian R1S and R1T models.

Fire Details and Response
The Normal Fire Department responded to the call just before 9:45 PM on Saturday night. Matt Swaney, a spokesperson for the fire department, stated that while multiple electric vehicles were damaged, the factory itself remained unaffected.
“The plant, which assembles all of Rivian’s current models and is on track to begin manufacturing the upcoming R2 SUV, was not affected by the fire,” Swaney confirmed.
Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze by midnight Sunday but remained on scene to monitor the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
Extent of Damage
An aerial photo shared on social media revealed the scope of the damage:
“An aerial photo and video were posted on a Facebook group after the fire showing 57 vehicles that were contained in a corner of the factory parking lot, next to the industrial train rails. Only R1S and R1T vehicles seem to have been involved in the fire.”
These vehicles were reportedly waiting to be shipped out to customers, adding a layer of complexity to the situation for Rivian.
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Swaney indicated that an investigation has been initiated to determine the source of the blaze. Rivian has yet to comment on the incident or its potential impact on production and deliveries.
EV Fire Safety Considerations
While this incident is concerning, it’s important to note that EV fires are statistically less common than those involving combustion engine vehicles. However, EV fires present unique challenges:
“Studies have shown that–contrary to popular belief–electric vehicle fires are much less likely to happen than combustion vehicle fires. However, when an EV ignites, it can be a lot more dangerous and dramatically harder for fire departments to put out, especially if they’re not equipped with the necessary tools.”
The risk of reignition is also a factor, explaining why fire crews often remain on scene long after the initial blaze is extinguished.
