Electric Vehicle Adoption Faces Hurdles in Northeast, Survey Reveals

A recent survey by AAA Northeast has shed light on the challenges facing electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the northeastern . According to a report by Newsday, more than half of the respondents in and New England states stated they have no plans to purchase an electric car.

Cost and Charging Concerns Top the List

The survey, which polled 1,749 people across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, identified cost and charging infrastructure as the primary obstacles to EV adoption.

Alec Slatky, AAA Northeast’s managing director of public and government affairs, noted, “You have to meet the consumers where they are and if they say they’re not ready for an electric vehicle, you have to sure public charging is much better.”

Long Island Leads in EV Adoption

Despite the overall hesitancy, Long Island stands out with over 62,000 registered electric vehicles, leading New York state in EV adoption. Experts argue that more education is needed to address misconceptions about EV operation and home charging capabilities.

Rosemary Mascali, chair of the education and outreach committee for Drive Electric Long Island, emphasized the convenience of home charging: “Most electric car owners, especially on Long Island, charge overnight at home and can save up to 40% on overnight PSEG Long Island electric rates.”

Mixed Sentiments Among Drivers

The survey revealed a split in consumer attitudes, with 37% of respondents either already owning an EV or considering purchasing one by 2035. However, only 8% said they would buy an EV after 2036, when several states may implement regulations to phase out new gas-powered vehicle sales.

Chris Flynn, a owner from Plainview, shared his experience: “The performance was one of the factors why I got it when gas prices were getting higher. Even though Tesla has one of the biggest charging networks, it definitely takes some time.”

Education and Infrastructure Key to Adoption

Andrew Manitt, deputy director of the sustainability institute at Molloy University, stressed the importance of education and workplace charging stations in changing perceptions.

He argued, “The vast majority of drivers on Long Island could have an electric car and not have to go to a public charging station” if charging is done at home.

EVXL’s Take

The AAA Northeast survey highlights the ongoing challenges in EV adoption, particularly in the northeastern United States. While concerns about cost and charging infrastructure persist, it’s crucial to recognize the progress being made, especially in areas like Long Island. As we’ve seen in our recent coverage of Tesla, advancements in and expanding charging networks are continuously improving the EV ownership experience.

The key to accelerating adoption lies in targeted education efforts and strategic infrastructure development, which will help bridge the gap between early adopters and those still hesitant to make the switch to electric vehicles.
