A Tesla Model Y driver walked away with only minor injuries despite a catastrophic crash on Interstate 5 near Los Banos, California, early this morning, leaving the vehicle completely destroyed. Reported by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Los Banos on July 7, 2025.
Crash Details and Driver Safety
At approximately 4:34 a.m. CDT, a Tesla Model Y traveling northbound on I-5 veered off the roadway near Panoche Road for unknown reasons, crossed a dirt center divide, and slammed into a metal guardrail. The impact impaled the car, with photos revealing the guardrail piercing the entire vehicle and wrecking the Tesla’s structure. Remarkably, the driver sustained only minor injuries and escaped unharmed.
The CHP noted, “Lucky for the driver he only sustained minor injuries and was able to walk away. Driving a vehicle requires 100% attention to the road. Avoid distractions and focus on driving.”
The driver was the sole occupant, limiting the incident’s severity. The Model Y’s electric powertrain, lacking a gasoline engine, likely reduced fire hazards typical in internal combustion engine (ICE) crashes, contributing to the driver’s survival.

Tesla Model Y Safety Features
The Tesla Model Y boasts a reinforced aluminum and steel frame, eight airbags, and a low center of gravity from its battery pack, designed to protect occupants. However, the guardrail’s penetration during the estimated 0.3-mile off-road impact overwhelmed the car’s crumple zones, totaling the vehicle. Tesla’s Autopilot system’s involvement remains under investigation.
