Stellantis just dropped some big news: the electric Ram 1500 REV and the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger are hitting the roads, and they’re being built right in Sterling Heights. This is a huge step for the company’s multienergy strategy, which includes gas, electric, and hybrid options. The announcement came straight from Stellantis, and it’s got everyone talking.
Big Investments, Big Plans
Stellantis is pouring $406 million into three Michigan facilities. The Sterling Heights Assembly Plant is getting a $235.5 million boost to build these electric trucks alongside their gas-powered counterparts, reports Detroit Free Press. This is a big deal, especially after some recent layoffs at Warren Truck.
CEO Carlos Tavares had some kind words for the Sterling Heights team, saying, “Sterling Heights Assembly has performed an incredible transformation in record time and I want to thank our colleagues for this great achievement.”
This investment is a much-needed win for the company, which has been facing some heat from the UAW and dealing with declining sales.
The Ramcharger: A Range-Extended Marvel
The Ramcharger is something special. It’s not a hybrid, but it uses both gas and electric power. With a 92 kilowatt-hour battery pack and a 130-kilowatt generator powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, it’s aiming for a whopping 690 miles of range. This is a smart move to ease range anxiety for folks who aren’t quite ready for a fully electric pickup.
EVs and Gas-Powered Trucks on the Same Line
Stellantis is pulling off something impressive at the Sterling Heights plant. They’ve managed to set up the assembly line to build EVs, gas-powered vehicles, and range-extended models all at the same time. The Ram REV 1500 is expected to hit 500 miles of range with a 229 kilowatt-hour battery pack, or up to 350 miles with a 168 kilowatt-hour pack.
Investments Beyond Sterling Heights
The investments don’t stop at Sterling Heights. Warren Truck is getting a $97.6 million boost to build an electrified Jeep Wagoneer, and Dundee Engine Plant is getting $73 million for battery tray production and other processes. This is all part of Stellantis’ plan to launch four Jeep EVs globally before the end of 2025.
