Dubuque Police Department Expands Hybrid Fleet, Holds Off on Full EVs

The Dubuque Police Department is gearing up to add eight new hybrid vehicles to its fleet, signaling a shift towards more fuel-efficient options while stopping short of fully electric models. According to a report by KCRG, this move aims to balance performance needs with environmental considerations.

A Pricey but Promising Investment

The department’s $383,184 purchase comes with a $30,000 premium over standard gas-powered alternatives. However, Lt. Luke Bock expects the fuel savings to eventually offset the higher initial cost. “We anticipate a fuel savings to offset that,” Bock stated, highlighting the long-term financial benefits of the hybrid technology.

Positive Experience Drives Expansion

With just one hybrid vehicle currently in their 47-car fleet, the department’s positive experience has prompted this larger order. Bock explained, “We’ve been very happy with the performance of that vehicle, which is what led us to order eight more.” The hybrid’s efficiency and lower maintenance costs have proven attractive, despite its minority status in the fleet.

Seamless Integration and Officer Approval

The transition to hybrid vehicles appears smooth, with Bock noting, “The only time you notice that you’re in a hybrid is when you stop at a red light or a stop sign or you pull over to write a report or something, and the RPMs drop and it gets much more quiet.” This subtle difference hasn’t deterred officers, who report no negative feedback and even praise the hybrid’s responsiveness and acceleration.

Performance Concerns Addressed

While some might worry about the pursuit capabilities of hybrid vehicles, the department assures that all vehicles, including the hybrids, are rigorously tested to meet high-speed chase requirements. Some officers have even reported that the hybrid model is more responsive and quicker to accelerate than its conventional counterparts.

EVs Not in the Immediate Future

Despite this move towards hybrid technology, Bock clarified that the department has no immediate plans to incorporate fully electric vehicles into their fleet. This decision suggests a cautious approach to new vehicle technologies, with hybrids serving as a middle ground between traditional gas-powered cars and all-electric options.

EVXL’s Take

While the Dubuque Police Department’s move to expand its hybrid fleet is commendable, it’s interesting to note their hesitation towards fully electric vehicles. This cautious approach mirrors the broader transition we’re seeing in law enforcement agencies across the country. As EV technology continues to advance, particularly in areas like range and charging speed, we may see more departments reconsidering their stance on all-electric fleets. For now, hybrids offer a practical stepping stone, balancing the need for reliable performance with improved fuel efficiency.
