MG’s Mystery SUV: Camouflaged EV Spotted in Australian Wild

MG looks set to expand its electric vehicle lineup in Australia, with a camouflaged SUV resembling the popular MG4 spotted testing in Victoria. The sighting, shared on social media by EV enthusiast Andrew M, has fueled speculation about MG’s next move in the Aussie market.

A Bigger Sibling for the MG4?

The mysterious vehicle, believed to be the MG S5, was caught on camera in Lakes Entrance, a tourist hotspot in Gippsland. At 176.2 inches long, it’s a step up from the current MG ZS EV’s 169.8-inch length.

The front end bears a striking resemblance to the MG4, with similar light designs peeking out from under the camouflage. A glass roof was also visible on the parked test vehicle.

What We Know So Far

While details are scarce, reports suggest the S5 will feature a rear-mounted 125 kW motor and a lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack from CATL & SAIC. The test vehicle is registered in NSW as an “ES34 evaluation vehicle” with a tare weight of 3,924 lbs.

One excited EV fan commented: “I wish this was going to be out sooner rather than later. I want to purchase before yrs end and this would be perfect.”

MG’s EV Success Story in Australia

MG has been on a roll in the Australian EV market. They pioneered affordable electric options back in 2020 with the ZS EV. Last year’s introduction of the MG4 hatchback, built on their new Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), pushed sales even higher. The MG4’s variety of battery options has helped them move over 3,300 EVs in 2024 alone.

Adding to their appeal, MG recently upped their warranty game, offering an industry-leading 10-year/155,000-mile coverage across their entire range, EVs included.

EVXL’s Take

MG’s potential expansion of its EV lineup in Australia is an exciting development for the growing electric vehicle market. The success of the MG4 hatchback has clearly given the company confidence to explore larger EV options. This move aligns with the broader industry trend of offering diverse EV body styles to cater to different consumer needs.

As we’ve seen with other manufacturers like Tesla and their Model Y, offering an SUV variant of a popular EV platform can significantly boost sales and accessibility. MG’s strategy of providing affordable electric options has already paid off, and this larger SUV could help them capture an even bigger slice of the market.
