Lucid Air Grand Touring Shatters EV Range Expectations in Overnight Test

The Lucid Air Grand Touring has once again proven its dominance in the electric vehicle range game, showcasing its impressive capabilities in a recent overnight highway test. According to InsideEVs, this American-made EV continues to set the bar for long-distance electric driving.

Record-Breaking Range

The 2024 Lucid Air Grand Touring, equipped with 19-inch wheels, boasts an EPA-estimated range of 516 miles, making it “the longest-distance electric car you can buy.” In a rigorous 70 mph highway test conducted by Tom Moloughney, a contributing editor at InsideEVs, the Air Grand Touring achieved an astounding 463 miles on a single charge.

“We have long known that the Air Grand Touring was capable of such incredible distances without stopping,” Moloughney noted in his report. The test had to be performed overnight to avoid traffic interference, underlining the vehicle’s exceptional endurance.

Efficiency is Key

What sets the Lucid Air apart isn’t just its range, but its remarkable efficiency. The test revealed an impressive 4.1 miles per kilowatt-hour rating, a figure that Moloughney considers exceptional, especially for highway driving where EVs typically struggle with efficiency.

“Perhaps more importantly, the Lucid Air proves that efficiency—not battery size—is how you win the day,” Moloughney emphasized. This efficiency demonstrates Lucid’s engineering prowess and sets a new standard for the industry.

Competitive Landscape

While the Lucid Air Grand Touring currently leads the pack, it’s not without competition. The Mercedes-Benz EQS and Tesla Model S are also noted for their long-range capabilities. However, as Moloughney states, “right now, Lucid is the one to beat.”

EVXL’s Take

The Lucid Air Grand Touring’s performance in this test is a testament to the rapid advancements in EV technology. As we’ve seen in our previous coverage of Lucid, the company continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in electric mobility. This latest achievement not only challenges other EV manufacturers but also puts pressure on traditional gas-powered vehicles in terms of long-distance travel capabilities.

The Air Grand Touring’s ability to cover such vast distances on a single charge addresses one of the primary concerns for potential EV adopters – range anxiety. As more vehicles like the Lucid Air enter the market, we can expect to see a shift in consumer perception and increased adoption of electric vehicles for long-distance travel.
