Audi Sparks Rumors of EV Plans in Mexico

German auto giant Audi is expected to reveal plans for manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) in Mexico this month, according to inside sources. However, a representative from Germany has denied any such developments.

Since 2016, the Puebla state in central Mexico has been home to Audi’s production of their Q5 compact SUV, along with a hybrid variant. A big announcement about Audi’s progression towards EVs is rumored to occur on July 18 at their plant in San Jose Chiapa, Puebla, with top German officials expected to be present.

An Audi spokesperson in Germany stated, “There is no announcement planned, and we cannot confirm any business trips or announcements.”

He also pointed out Audi’s aspiration to have at least one EV manufactured at each of its global production locations, including Mexico, by 2030.

The Puebla state is a significant auto hub, housing a large Volkswagen factory and many parts suppliers. The Mexican President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, hinted at upcoming investments in Puebla’s auto industry, though it remains unclear how much Audi plans to invest.

Both Audi and Volkswagen have expressed ambitions to boost their global EV output. Volkswagen declared last year a plan to invest more than $7 billion over the next five years in North America, including for EV production.

In Mexico, they announced a $763 million investment last year to enhance the Puebla plant, introducing a new electric-powered paint division.

As Mexico strives to increase production of eco-friendly vehicles, the country’s officials anticipate more investment from Audi. Last year, Audi released a statement discussing growth plans at the plant and the shift to “solely completely electric cars in the future,” Reuters informes.
