Volkswagen Recalls Nearly 100,000 ID.4 EVs Due to Door Handle Issue

Volkswagen Group of America Inc. has issued a recall for almost 100,000 of its 2021-2024 electric vehicles, specifically the ID.4 EV sport-utility vehicle, due to a potential issue with the door handles. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these vehicles may have been built with door handles that do not meet “factory specifications,” which could lead to the doors opening unexpectedly while driving. This recall, published by the NHTSA on Sept. 4, highlights a critical safety concern for EV owners.

The Issue with ID.4 Door Handles

The ID.4 is Volkswagen’s latest electric car, and this recall affects a significant number of these vehicles. The NHTSA reported that water can seep into the printed circuit board through the doors, leading to malfunctions and potentially causing the door locks to open unexpectedly. This is a serious safety issue that Volkswagen is addressing promptly.

What Owners Need to Know

Volkswagen dealers will inspect and replace the door handles and update the vehicle software for free. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed out on Nov. 1. Owners can also contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 for more information. Additionally, owners can check the NHTSA’s database for new recalls using their vehicle identification number (VIN), explains USA Today.

How to Check if Your Car is Recalled

If you own a Volkswagen ID.4, it’s crucial to check if your vehicle is part of this recall. The NHTSA website allows you to search for recalls based on your VIN, making it easy to stay informed about any safety issues related to your vehicle.

EVXL’s Take

This recall underscores the importance of ongoing quality control and safety measures in the electric vehicle industry. While issues like this can occur, it’s reassuring to see Volkswagen taking swift action to address the problem. As EVs continue to gain popularity, it’s essential for manufacturers to prioritize safety and reliability.

However, recalls like this can impact consumer confidence. It’s worth noting that Volkswagen isn’t alone in facing challenges as it ramps up EV production. As we discussed in another article, even industry leader Tesla has faced scrutiny over range claims for its Model Y. These issues underscore the complexities involved in EV manufacturing and the importance of transparent communication with consumers about vehicle performance and safety.
