Tesla Unveils “Hands-Free Frunk” Feature for Select Models

Tesla has introduced a new convenience feature for some of its electric vehicles, allowing owners to open the front trunk (frunk) without using their hands. This news was shared by Sawyer Merritt on X, formerly known as Twitter.

How It Works

The “Hands-Free Frunk” feature enables Tesla owners to open their vehicle’s frunk even when their hands are full. Here’s how it operates:

  1. Stand still in front of the frunk
  2. Ensure the Phone Key is unobstructed
  3. Listen for chimes
  4. The frunk opens automatically

“Open your frunk even when your hands are full. Stand still in front of your frunk with Phone Key unobstructed, listen for the chimes, and the frunk opens on its own,” the feature description explains.

Enabling the Feature

To activate this new functionality, Tesla owners need to:

  1. Go to vehicle settings
  2. Navigate to Locks > Hands-Free Frunk and Trunk
  3. Enable the feature

Additionally, users must ensure their phone settings allow Nearby Interactions for the Tesla app or open the app and go to Phone Key > Upgrade.

Safety Precautions

Tesla reminds users to “Keep people and clothing clear of moving parts” when using this feature, emphasizing safety around the vehicle.

Software Update

The Hands-Free Frunk feature is part of Tesla’s software update 2024.32.3, indicating it’s a recent addition to the vehicle’s capabilities.
