Agreement Details

The deal between Georgia Power and Tesla is substantial. It involves a battery and equipment supply agreement (BESA) for a portfolio that includes:

  • Total capacity: 500MW/2,000MWh
  • Four separate projects of varying sizes
  • All projects will use Tesla’s 3.9MWh 2XL Megapack units
  • Megapacks use lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery technology
  • Batteries manufactured at Tesla’s megapack factory in Lathrop,

Project Locations and Capacities

The four BESS projects are spread across different counties in Georgia:

  1. Robins BESS in Bibb County (128MW)
  2. Moody BESS in Lowndes County (49.5MW)
  3. Hammond BESS in Floyd County (57.5MW)
  4. McGrau Site Phase II BESS in Cherokee County (265MW)

Timeline and Purpose

The projects are set to provide dispatchable power resources by winter 2026/2027. They aim to address resource shortfalls identified for that period. Georgia Power is seeking expedited approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission to move forward with these initiatives.

Additional Details

Tesla will guarantee consistent battery capacity and maintain round-trip efficiency for the expected 20-year lifespan of the projects. Georgia Power has also entered into EPC agreements with Burns & McDonnell and Crowder Industrial Construction for the projects. The utility intends to pay for construction through its rate base and will utilize any available tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act, passing benefits to customers.

Context

This agreement is part of Georgia Power’s broader efforts to expand its energy storage capabilities. The utility is also nearing completion of the 65MW Mossy Branch battery facility and developing the 265MW McGrau Ford Phase I BESS project.

EVXL’s Take
